Why does my hash differ from the terminal?
echo adds a newline at the end; this tool hashes the text exactly as typed. printf "%s" "text" | sha256sum gives the same result.
Is MD5 safe?
Not for passwords or signatures — collisions are easy to make. It is still fine for checking that a file was not damaged in transit.
