Fix garbled text (encoding)

Paste text that came out as "Привет", "при", "ðÒÉ×ÅÔ" or Chinese characters, and get it back. Every "written in one encoding, read in another" pair is tried — UTF-8, Windows-1251, KOI8-R, CP866, Mac, Latin-1, GBK and more — and the one that reads as language wins. Open a file to find its encoding.

Questions

Where does garbled text come from?

From bytes written in one encoding and read in another: a UTF-8 page shown as Windows-1251, a CSV from an old program opened as UTF-8, a DOS file in CP866. The letters are not damaged, only misread — so reading them the right way gets them back.

Can every text be fixed?

Most can. When a program replaced unreadable bytes with "" or "?", those letters are gone for good; the rest is restored and the lost ones are marked. Chinese characters out of Russian text are usually this case.

How do I find a file’s encoding?

Open the file instead of pasting it: it is read in each encoding and the one that reads as language is shown, with its name in the status line.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything is tried in this tab.
